After years of a turbulent legal battle, Kesha releases her third studio album, Rainbow.
Kesha, formerly known as Ke$ha, has grown out of her self-proclaimed “party animal” persona and truly matured from recent events that unfolded.
In October 2014, Kesha sued her producer, Dr. Luke, who previously worked on her last two records, for sexual assault and battery. Kesha claimed in the lawsuit that she was drugged and abused by Dr. Luke. She wanted out of her contract with Sony.
Dr. Luke denied all allegations, then filed a counter-lawsuit against Kesha and her mother for defamation.
The lawsuit later ended with Kesha’s request for a preliminary injunction to be out of her contract, which was denied and she still had to release three more albums under her abuser’s record label.
She still has to release two more albums under Luke. Rainbow, still released under RCA and Dr. Luke’s Kemosabe Records is a triumphant expression of life. She bares her soul on tracks such as, “Praying,” which expresses her higher and diverse vocal range with an echoing gospel-like feel.
She is also singing directly about the man she sued. Expressing these feelings, she sings, “I hope your soul is changing/I hope you find you peace/falling on your knees/Praying.”
On the passionate song, “Learn To Let Go,” she explains her new way of living life by exclaiming “The past can’t haunt me if I don’t let it/Live and learn and never forget it,” trying to get over every horrible events in her past.
The album still remains light and airy with tracks like the boisterous “Woman,” where she expresses her independence. On the carefree “Let Em’ Talk,” she is letting go of her insecurities.
Throughout her trials and tribulations, Kesha embraces herself and finds the joy of being alive.
