The badminton team had a stroke of luck during tryouts.
Last month at Nogales, they were held in preparation for the spring season on October 18th from 3:00 to 4:30 P.M. and on October 20th from 1:15 to 2:45 P.M in the MPR room.
Tryouts were hosted by Head Coach Victor Rosilez and Coach Nathaniel Rosilez early this school year to allow the newer players to learn the rules of the sport. Of course, the coaches did not anticipate that an astonishing total of 36 athletes would join so eagerly. They were especially surprised since the team has a history of being short on male players.
Coach Rosilez, commented, ¨I feel that we had a promising group of enthusiastic kids tryout for this year’s team. We will be young and inexperienced this year, but I have a good feeling that the kids will work hard and be competitive in league.¨
The team will struggle at first, but with a little hard work, they can definitely succeed in the upcoming spring season.
As of now, it is important for the team to get a hang of this highly addicting sport. At times, learning the drills and new shots will be difficult, but it will be rewarding once that hard work is put into action.
There are a group of new students willing to learn and work hard. According to Coach Nathaniel, ¨This year’s crop of kids seems eager to learn the game and will be put to work from day one.”
Coach Nathaniel is excited for the future games because the students have some good role models. “As for the upcoming season, we know there’s going to be growing pains and some struggles with having lost half of last year’s varsity team to graduation. We’ll be looking to Victoria Herrera and Franz Salisi to provide leadership and set the tone for practices and games.¨
Even though the badminton team lost so many experienced players last year, there are still high hopes for the upcoming seasons.
Members will have the opportunity to learn the rules of the sport, footwork, drills and how to properly hit the shuttlecock.
Practices this semester will be held in the MPR room from 3:10 to 4:30 P.M every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
