Earlier this month, the Nogales Cross Country team had their league meet finals.
On Thursday, November 2nd, the outstanding highlight of the day was when the varsity girls took first place as a team.
After a thrilling race, the girls were able to pull it off and win it all. The top runners receiving “All League” patches were Alexis Maldonado (freshman), who placed second with a time of twenty minutes and seventeen seconds, Jenny Morales (junior), who finished in 5th place achieving a time of twenty-one minutes and forty-seven seconds, and Jeanette Salcido (sophomore), coming in 8th place and earning a time of twenty-two minutes and five seconds.
All varsity girls worked hard throughout the season and gave it their all to win the three-mile course in the finals. The victory took everyone by surprise and brought excitement to the team. After three decades, the varsity girls will honorably be receiving a title of league champions.
Before the race started, one of the varsity boys Kevin Zarate, motivated the girls by telling them, “pass as many girls as you can and tell yourself you are more powerful and have more strength than everyone else.. the best pace is a suicide pace and today is a good day to die.”
After the reveal of the champions, coach Xavier (Curly) Chavez, could not have been more proud telling the team, “The majority of you beat your personal record (time) from the previous race and I’m glad you all worked together to win. We made history today.”
The cross country varsity girls will now be advancing to the CIF prelims this month.
