Last Friday, the Nogales Nobles Varsity soccer team faced their most formidable league opponent yet, The Sierra Vista Dons. Seen as the underdogs in this game, the Nobles held their own against the Dons till the very last minute. However, at the end of the day, the boys fell short to a score of 1-0.
The game kicked off at the Jack Jolley Stadium, in the late evening of January 19th. Those who went to support the team were met with inconsistent rain falls, while the athletes handled a saturated field, which provided an intensifying factor to the match up with many close calls.
At the beginning of the game, the match was at a constant change of tides with the Sierra Vista Dons, holding a higher amount of possessions. The Nobles began to pick up momentum providing for a clash of constant pressure, which made it difficult to predict the direction of the game.
The first half of the game then ended on a stalemate, adding some discomfort to both teams mentally. The coaches, took time to provide words of encouragement and riled up the boys in order to maintain intensity.
Head Coach Javier Aguiniga, motivated the boys with strong words, “ It’s a matter of who wants it more”
The grit factor was indeed there for both teams. As the second half rolled out, the early stream of offense from Sierra Vista was repelled by the Nogales defence. Though shortly after, an SVHS player was fouled inside the 18 yard box, causing a penalty kick to be given in favor of the Dons.
The Dons were able to capitalize on this opportunity placing them ahead with a score of 1 to 0. Unfortunately, the Nobles were unable to answer back with one of their own, and the match ended with a loss for the Nogales team.
Varsity Captain, Jiovanni Santillan, had positive perspective at the end of the game stating, “It was a good game but we weren’t able to make the best out of our opportunities and one mistake cost us the game. Though we plan on staying focused despite the results.”
Win or lose, the Nobles still plan to make the best out of their season. Make sure to come out and support the Nogales soccer team to see the boys bounce back with full force on February 2, against Duarte.
