Kali Uchis has achieved what so many strive to buy: she managed to live the American Dream. The Columbian-born, singer-songwriter, finally released her anticipated debut album, Isolation.

While Isolation, is Uchis’ first official studio album, for the past couple of years, she has shown to be a real go-getter. From self-releasing two projects: her 2012 mixtape, Drunken Babble, to her 2015 EP, Por Vida; featuring a plethora of big name acts in the music industry including artists like Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz, and Tyler and The Creator. Uchis never failed to hold up her own.

Isolation, is the culmination of everything Uchis’ has constantly been striving for all these years. Brimming with charisma and charm, the release is anything but a letdown.

Beginning with the light and sensual, Thundercat-produced “Body Language,” Uchis sets the stage for what’s to come. Showcasing flowing synths, gorgeously stunning vocals and an infectiously likeable carefree essence that demonstrates an elegant harmony, Uchis impressively proves to be a force that should not be reckoned with.

Every single track off of Isolation has a different producer that manages to change the sound throughout the entire release. Going from Tame Impala member, Kevin Parker’s psychedelic R&B “Tomorrow,” to the Internet member, Steve Lacy’s uptempo, pro-femininity, “Just a Stranger,” Uchis, is like a chameleon. She exquisitely genre-bends, adapts to every new sound and does not allow anyone to divert attention away for herself.

On this release, Uchis subtlety implies that she has not had the easiest childhood, let alone the easiest life. On the piano based “Killer,” which she wrote when she was only 17 years old, she describes her rocky relationship with her father and how it led to failed lovers in the future.

In the song “In My Dreams,” she describes her own coping mechanism and tries to leave her harsh reality and live in her fantasy, singing, “I’m never stressing my bills/nobody ever gets killed/It’s the dream world.” This theme runs true through the entire album as she tries to escape every form of negativity. In “Tomorrow.” Uchis croons, “Come on let’s go /we’ll think about it tomorrow,” forgetting every worry in the world.

This is why Isolation works. Not only is Uchis getting some form of catharsis from releasing the music, but it also transports the listener into this lucid wonderland that she is creating. She is providing the escapism that she strives for and it’s utterly captivating.
