On April 26th and 27th, 2018, Nogales’ Badminton Team competed in their last two games: league prelims and league finals.

For players to advance to league finals, it was necessary for them to win prelims as either individuals or as a team. There were five events during the game and each event was won individually, including: mix doubles, boy doubles, girls doubles, boy singles, and girl singles.

Each game was played as a match, consisting of the best of three sets, with each set worth 21 points. The ranking placed the teammates in the order where they could easily be eliminated by the most outstanding player in the league.

Juniors, Fatima Macarenas and Gisselle Tabur, placed second for girls doubles. Both girls made an incredible turn over because it was difficult to beat the opponents during the season, however, they still won on League Finals.

Franz Salisi, senior, got third place in the boys singles match while Victoria Herrera, senior, placed second in the girls singles. Herrera explained with excitement, “It was really exciting to see such a dramatic change in momentum in this final battle. Through this experience, I saw my teammates gain more confidence in their abilities. I’m excited to see how we will progress in the CIF tournaments.”

The players that got first and second place advanced with victory to compete at CIF prelims. Franz, who won third place in the boys singles, will join and compete in CIF because the player who achieved first place dropped out.

Head Varsity Coach, Victor Rozilez, proudly said, “League finals are always exciting to partake in as it brings out all of the top performers in the league. As a whole, I felt we performed extremely well, qualifying four players for the CIF individual tournament, the most we have had in six years.”

The Badminton Team worked extremely hard during after school practices. They will be competing in CIF on Monday, May 7th, against Eisenhower High School at the Nogales High School gym.
