The Nogales High School basketball coach, Sameer Bhatt, has been named the San Gabriel Valley Coach of the Year, last month.

On April 3rd, Sameer Bhatt was given the honor as Coach of the Year, after his success in leading his team to winning the first CIF championship in school history.

Coach Bhatt, was grateful to have the opportunity to work with this team. “ I am thankful to have coached such a great group of young men”.

Coach Bhatt is thankful for his award. He added, “I am truly honored and humbled to be named the San Gabriel Valley Area Coach of the Year.”

After 23 years, losing to Mater Dei in the 1995 Division 1AA title game, the Nogales Basketball team had an opportunity to redeem themselves this past season.

Coach Bhatt graduated from Bonita High School with the class of 2008. He began his coaching career at his alma mater. Working to help young men find their own meaningful path and sharing a common love for basketball, inspired him to become a coach.

After 4 years of coaching, Bhatt, was able to guide the Nogales Varsity Boys Basketball team reach the pinnacle of High School sports. He lead the Nogales boys to the state playoffs before losing in the second round and finishing the season with the record of 26-8.

The brotherhood that the team had all formed, is Bhatt’s primary motivation is to keep working as hard as possible. Bhatt explained, “I have never coached a group of kids that bonded together so well. They gave it everything they had – in the classroom, off the court as friends, and as teammates on the basketball court. I could not have asked for anything more – it was just a great experience that helped me grow as a man.”
