A recap of winter sports accomplishments at Nogales

Victor Uribe, Freshman

In the 2018-2019 season of winter sports, Nogales has had immense success and a fair share of teams that won league and ran deep into the CIF playoffs. From girls basketball to boys soccer, the sports teams left the name of Nogales High School with a solid reputation in the field of sports.

One team that had a long run in the CIF championship and competed against teams of the highest levels was the boys’ varsity soccer team. They paved their way through the fourth round until they suffered defeat against St. Margaret’s in a heartbreaking 4 to 1 loss that ended their playoff run. This included wins against Arroyo High, Coachella Valley High and La Canada High.

Another team that performed amazingly were the boys’ varsity basketball team. They achieved an incredible accomplishment as they defeated their league for the first time this decade, with their last title being in 2009. In their first round of CIF though, they lost against Loara High School as they could not  match the results of their previous season in which they won the CIF Championship and advanced to the CIF state championship.

Another team that deserves recognition because of their outstanding accomplishment is the girls’ varsity basketball team as they made Nogales High School history by winning league for the first time. Although they made history, the Lady Nobles were not able to continue their magical run as they lost in a home game against Dominguez High School in their first round of CIF.

The Lady Nobles varsity soccer team also found success as they finished second in their league and went to CIF-where they unfortunately lost against Sage Hills High in the first round.

Because of a tremendous winter sports season, it can be observed that Nogales High School should be proud of their sports program as it consisted of many remarkable and praise-worthy achievements.
