On September 24, 2019, the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, officially announced an Impeachment Inquiry against the President of the United States, Donald Trump. This comes after a whistleblower, told officials on a phone conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump pressed Zelensky to investigate former U.S. Vice President, Joe Biden’s son, seeking information to smear Biden’s campaign. Biden is a contender for the democratic party who will be running against Trump.
“The actions of the Trump presidency have revealed the dishonorable fact of the President’s betrayal of his oath of office, and betrayal of the integrity of our elections,”Pelosi stated. Donald Trump, however, denounced the Impeachment Inquiry calling it a “witch hunt.” To defend himself, Trump released a transcript of the call.
The transcript revealed that Trump pressed the President of Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden more than five times asking him to cooperate with Attorney General William Barr, and Trump withheld aid to Ukraine putting pressure on its president to produce more information.
The democrats sent subpoenas to the people involved in the call, including Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, who revealed, on television that it wasn’t wrong to get dirt on a political opponent.
Adam Schiff, who is leading the investigations, faced multiple attacks by President Trump calling for his resignation and threatening him with treason. The secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, pushed back the inquiry, saying Democrats are just trying to bully officials who are gathering information from the Ukraine investigation, asking for executive branch lawyers to join him.
Democrats responded furiously, threatening to subpoena the White House unless they stop intimidating witnesses, if they don’t voluntarily produce documents regarding the call.
All in all, two whistleblowers emerged and 51% of Americans support the impeachment. Mitch Mcconnell believes if impeachment passes, there is nothing who Mcconnell can do and a senate trial must be held.
The White House sent an 8-page letter to the house saying it will not cooperate with impeachment investigations after subpoenas were sent for the failure of producing documents. Nancy Pelosi responded by saying, “The White House should be warned that continued efforts to hide the truth of the President’s abuse of power from the American people, it will be regarded as further evidence of obstruction. Mr. President, you are not above the law. You will be held accountable.
”If Impeachment is successful, Donald Trump will be the 3rd president to go through this process.
