The release of the 2020-2021 High School Sports Calendar

Andrew Valles, Junior

On July 20th, 2020, the commissioner of athletics, Rob Wigod, released a CIF Southern Section Update. This memo included information and a calendar for fall, winter and spring sports during the 2020-2021 school year in the state of California.

Wigod was grateful for all of the patience and help he received before releasing the new dates:“I want to thank CIF executive Director Ron Nocetti and CIF Associate Executive Director Brian Seymour for their leadership, along with my fellow Section Commissioners and our entire staff for their hard work, dedication and professionalism throughout this entire process.”

The fall, winter and spring sports have been condensed into only 2 seasons:, Fall and Spring. This decision was made in order to help with spacing between particular sports and the overlap of certain sports seasons.

The length of certain sports seasons has been reduced to approximately 72 days. Other sports who had less than 72 days remained the same.

In addition to these changes, summer time rules have also been extended from the beginning of the school year in August to December and the beginning of fall sports.  High school athletic programs (e.g basketball, baseball, cheerleading), will be under the authority of their School Principal and Athletic Directors.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the situation could change again, which is explained in the  CIF Southern Section Bylaw,  . “In emergency situations, between meetings of the Southern Council, the Executive Committee shall be empowered to act for the Southern Sections Council when necessary,” explained.

As for the new sports calendar for the 2020-2021 school year, it is able to be viewed on the CIF Southern section website at Fall sports will be from very late December to late March. Spring Sports will be from late March to very late June.
