The long awaited Netflix Original film, Enola Holmes, directed by Harry Bradbeer, was released September 23, 2020. This movie follows the adventures of Enola Holmes, the very insightful little sister of the famous Sherlock Holmes, as she works to unravel the strange mystery of her mother’s sudden disappearance.

Enola is played by 16-year-old British actress Millie Bobby Brown, who is widely known for her role as Eleven in the very successful Netflix show, Stranger Things. Brown is not the only renowned actor that was casted for this film; alongside her worked Helena Bonham Carter, Millie’s on-screen mom, who was in movies such as Ocean’s 8 and Alice in Wonderland. Henry Cavill, who plays Sherlock Holmes in the film, is famous for being Superman from the 2013 film Man of Steel and Sam Claflin is portraying Mycroft Holmes, who can be seen in the motion pictures Catching Fire and Me Before You.

Enola Holmes is a comedic yet action packed adaptation of Nancy Springer’s young adult fiction novel, An Enola Holmes Mystery: The Case of the Missing Marquess. Enola’s character is very insightful and intelligent with a strong female leading role emphasizing the “… impactful message that you can do anything if you set your mind to it.”

In this film, the audience follows Enola’s journey through London to find her mother, while having to hide from her brothers, Sherlock and Mycroft. Enola, unlike other girls her age, does not know how to do the activities that she is “supposed” to be able to perform, such as embroidery and how to laugh politely. Her mother instead taught her science, how to fight and to be observant of her surroundings.

Enola mentions numerous times throughout the film that her name spelled backwards is “Alone,” and yet, Enola proves time and time again that she can succeed on her own, and that she doesn’t need a husband to have worth. Junior, Samantha Hernandez, shared that this is a wonderful way to inspire young women: “The film is empowering for young girls because it shows how to be an independent woman and how to strive alone.”

Fans are hopeful that this will not be the last time we see these characters, considering that this movie is an adaptation of a novel from the Enola Holmes Mysteries series. Regardless of whether we get any more movies of Enola’s adventures any time soon, this film is definitely a must-watch.
