Senior Night Ends on a Tough Loss for the Football Team

Brandon Duarte, Senior

The Seniors in cheer, band and football celebrated their senior night, commemorating the last home game of the season. The game against Diamond Bar High School, which happened on October 22nd, ended in a heartbreaking defeat with a score of 20-34.

From the beginning, the game was not looking good, as Diamond Bar scored a touchdown and an extra point in the first minute of the game. The Nogales football team wisely decided to play the game slowly, so that Diamond Bar could not score as often, with the hopes that Nogales could have a chance at catching up.

The strategy of playing slow and steady worked, as our football team eventually started catching  up in the third quarter, with a score of 14-27.

In the fourth quarter, Nogales scored another touchdown but missed the extra point, bringing the score deficit to one possession, 20-27.

Nogales was less than 50 yards away from the endzone to tie the game, but the offensive drive unfortunately led to a turnover on downs, as Nogales could not get a pass completed. Diamond Bar received the ball after the failed fourth down conversion and scored a touchdown by running the ball with the same player, ending the existing hopes of a noble comeback.

Junior, Edwin Navarro, said the team did better than he expected: “The game went way better than I thought it would.”

Despite the loss, the game was still extremely exciting for the spectators. In the fourth quarter, the players were doing much better, and it felt like victory was in reach for Nogales.

Senior and cheerleader Britney Martinez had fun despite the loss: “We had an amazing time celebrating our last football game.”

The celebration of the hard work the Seniors put in overpowered the negative feelings the loss brought and the evening ended on a high note.
