On January 8, the Nogales cheer team took part in their first competition of the season, located at the Riverside Convention Center. Before this event, the last time they competed was in February of 2020.

In preparation for the Lady Nobles’ first competition, they received help from Coach Martinez, Ms. H. and Coach Izzy. The routine took around eight days to perfect, including two days where a handful of girls were missing from practice. Despite the obstacles that showed up along the way, the team was determined to push through.

When competition day arrived, the girls stepped into the competitive atmosphere with many emotions. Senior Alyssa Gonzalez described her feelings as she entered the arena: “It was overwhelming yet exciting. After two years, it felt so good to be back and the feeling of winning was even better.”

The team competed in level one performance cheer with only ten athletes, facing St. Anthony High School from Long Beach, California. The participating teams had approximately two minutes and thirty seconds to leave their mark on the mat.

The performance from the Lady Nobles consisted of tumbling, cheering and stunting. Sophomore Violet Flores, highlights the role of the crowd as “encouraging and supportive throughout the entire performance.”

Around 7:00 PM, the team headed to the award ceremony to receive the final results. The cheer team placed first in their division with zero deductions.

The Lady Nobles’ displayed effort and dedication with their first-place finish. The team hopes to continue with more positive results for the remainder of their competition season.
