The wrestling season has begun and what a great way to start the season with a tournament. Nogales High School wrestling competed in a 2-day tournament at Damien High School from December 10 to December 11.

The head of wrestling, Coach Fuentes, wanted the boys to do their best but enjoy themselves too: “This is the first tournament of the season. I don’t expect much but for them to just go out there, try their best today and have some fun.” The team was anxious and excited for their first wrestling tournament since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Weigh-ins started at 1:30 PM, but due to complications, wrestling did not start until 6:00 PM. Damien High School divided the lightweights and heavyweights as they had an extra gym. Jonas Davis, Anthony Pulido and David Tuche competed in the 120 weight class. Constantinos Dimitriadis took part in the 126 class, Domenick Ibarra and Jordan Barnes at 132 and Joaquin Bustamante, Dominic Quintero, and Oliver Jacobs V competed in the heavyweights.

The boys’ scores in the event were 0-2 from Alberto Cristi and Domenick Ibarra, 1-2 from Dominic Quintero, Anthony Pulido and Joaquin Bustamante, 2-1 from David Tuche and 2-0 from Oliver Jacob’s V. Tuche and Jacobs V made it to the second day of competition.

Senior and heavyweight Oliver Jacobs V ultimately placed 1st in his respective category. He shared his feelings after coming out victorious: “I was both nervous and excited before the tournament. I thank everyone who showed up to support us.”
