Boys Basketball Faces a Crushing Defeat on Senior Night

On Friday, February 5, 2022, the Nogales varsity boys basketball team played against Sierra Vista High School at around 7:00 PM.

Before the game, Coach Corbin displayed his excitement, given that it was senior night as well, stating, “I’m excited for the seniors, it’s their last game, I hope they enjoyed their journey at Nogales.”

As the game progressed in the early quarters, solid performances by Benjamin Cruz, Justin Pyio, and Mathew Barragan saw the boys lead the game with a 31-20 score.

At around 7:45 PM, the second half of the game started. Justin Pyio and Alberto Cardenas continued to score in attempts to maintain the lead the boys built before halftime. However, the away team had different plans. Sierra Vista cut the lead throughout quarters 3 and 4 until subsequently catching up and coming back, ending the game with a score of 49-52.

Overall, the game was very intense and it could’ve been anyone’s win in the latter moments of the 4th quarter.

Alberto Cardenas gave his post-game thoughts on this tough loss: “We fought and gave it our all, but at the end of the game, we stuck together as brothers and that’s all that matters.”

Benjamin Cruz also ended the game with a moral high note. “I felt proud because everyone worked hard to get where we are.”
