On March 17, 2022, the Nogales boys varsity tennis team competed against crosstown rival Rowland High at home, where unfortunately, the game resulted in favor of the opponents.
The boys had excellent strategies and were competitive throughout the entire game. However, after completing the eighteen sets, the final score was 5-13, including the singles and doubles matches.
Nogales player Ashler Lou won all three single sets with scores of 7-6, 6-2 and 6-1. Jonathan Ramirez and Isaac Martinez won two of the double sets with both final scores being 7-5.
History teacher and tennis coach, Mr. Malignaggi, described the current state of the team. “ I have acknowledged that the team is improving based on the last couple of days after facing our opponents. We are seeking to continue to develop our skills and to present excellent matches throughout the rest of the season.”
The boy’s tennis team is gaining more experience to enhance their overall performance and to continue practicing the basics, as well as being trained to play more aggressively.
Mr. Malignaggi is looking forward to the future and the overall season. “Concluding at the top four would be a huge achievement since last year’s pandemic led us to have a small team, where we weren’t able to compete with all of the other schools and had little exposure to the reality of competition.”
Despite landing on the defeat column, the team is striving to succeed in the remaining matches of the season.
